A history of innovative design

  • Motorola phones

    Pioneering Digital Assistants

    As smart phones started to become a central hub of everything we do in our lives, Motorola needed to create a central assistant to interact and automate your everyday actions. Similar to Siri and Alexa, I worked on "Moto" which is the digital assistant for Motorola devices. We designed contextually relevant automations, as well as responses for everyday needs.

    A Vision for Shopping

    As a part of Walmart's new unified app architecture, I was tasked with rethinking the product scanning experience. The original scanner supported just product scans, but we were expanding it as a platform of its own to support service workflows, and even Machine Vision product detection.

  • Building Better Enterprise Tools

    Tyco Integrated Security needed a better understanding of how their existing iOS field app was being used. I performed a UX research ride-along study across the US, and made design recommendations for their next generation of enterprise tools.

  • Phones with SmartActions

    Automating Users with Context

    In the early days of smartphones, I worked on a project called "SmartActions" than enabled users to build custom automations that would trigger on everyday events like driving, or your battery getting low. This was a pioneer in the software automation space, and moved the industry forward into products like Siri Shortcuts and Google Assistant today.

    Giving Customers a Voice

    I was the principal designer on the "Looking Ahead" team at Walmart. Part of our charter was to support and explore innovative new ways to shop, including voice assistant integrations and smart displays.

    We shipped both a Google Assistant integration as well as a Siri Shortcut that allowed users to add items to their cart. We used the customers shopping history to disambiguate what they wanted for requests that could be multiple different items.

    Driving UX in Commercial Trucking

    A new trucking regulation forced carriers everywhere to adopt new IoT devices to be in compliance. ZED was a Cummins funded startup that where I led the UX team to pioneer new ways to manage and report trucking duty hours.

  • AI-Powered Virtual Try On

    As a principal UX designer, I led the initial design evaluation of virtual dressing room technology for Walmart. This project included creating initial design flows to share with stakeholders, and doing a tech evaluation to find experience pitfalls before an acquisition was made.

Mobile Apps

The majority of my work has been on iOS and Android. I’ve made both 1st party and 3rd party apps. I’ve shipped apps for large corporations, startups, and everything in-between.

Smart Speakers & Displays

I’ve designed, built, and tested experiences for smart home displays and virtual assistant speakers. My work has included Apple’s HomePod, Google’s smart displays, and even some displays built into consumer appliances like refrigerators.

Web

From IoT device web portals to major e-commerce sites making billions in sales, I’ve got history enabling users with the flexibility and convenience of a browser-based experience.

iPad & AppleTV

I’ve created and shipped apps designed for iPadOS and tvOS in the games and entertainment space. Many of the mobile apps I’ve been involved with have multi-platform support enabled, so I’m constantly optimizing for both small and large format layouts.

Custom Commercial Devices

Enabling enterprise users, I've done considerable work creating designs for custom in-wall energy displays, drive-thru order interfaces, and Zebra barcode scanning units. I’ve also made lots of tech proposals for businesses, including NFC/RFID, BLE beacons, and QR tags for inventory.

CarPlay, WatchOS, & VisionOS

I’ve designed education strategies and apps for CarPlay. I’ve also been involved in WatchOS designs for both 1st Party and 3rd Party experiences. With Apple Vision Pro, I’ve been responsible for designing education strategies that utilize and teach about this exciting new product’s capabilities.

My UX Topic specialties

  • From machine vision models to Siri, I've spent most of my 17 year career in UX designing features that are powered by AI, so I have a great deal of knowledge of what it means to design for our AI powered future.

  • Every platform has its unique challenges. I've been a leading expert in designing privacy permissions flows, building around hardware capabilities, and even curating App Store submissions.

  • Many of the projects I've worked on have required strict adherence to regulatory requirements. This includes projects bound by California Privacy Rights Act, HIPPA, GDPR, and even non-governmental oversight like App Store submission requirements.

  • Getting your users on the right foot out of the gate can be a serious challenge for any experience. My priority is to bring users up to speed with the lowest effort, often utilizing available technologies like NFC for setting up hardware or Sign In with Apple/Google.

  • The best tool is one that doesn't need explanation, but often we run into circumstances with today's complicated products that some education is required. I've been involved with education strategy for both small and big companies.

  • I've designed 1P and 3P experiences for virtual assistants on both Apple and Google's platforms. I have a deep understanding of the capabilities and limits of voice as an interaction pattern.

  • Interaction Design

    I have a passion for creating efficient flows that enhance user experience. Intuitive navigation and clear pathways help users engage with the product smoothly, achieving goals with minimal friction. My aim is to empower users as they navigate their objectives.

  • Information Architecture

    Understanding a holistic picture of the user's information needs allows me to architect the most efficient IA structure. I've been a key contributor and owner to the information architecture for all of the UX projects I've worked on.

  • Prototyping

    Holding a design in your hand and seeing it come to life is orders of magnitude more powerful than viewing static designs. I've brought innovative new prototyping techniques to the companies and projects I've worked on, including creating real-code proto-apps. I've also created voice prototypes using Google Actions and Siri Shortcuts.

  • Research

    I've worked with fully staffed UX research departments on getting reliable design insights. I've also designed, proctored, and summarized my own UX research initiatives. I'm well rehearsed in understanding how to minimize bias in user research, and knowing what kinds of studies to plan based on the hypotheses and questions the UX team has.

    Coaching Golf

    I started playing golf in high school, and have since passed this hobby onto my 2 daughters. I'm currently the assistant coach to my daughter's middle school team where I've been helping girls get started with the sport.

    Home Automation

    Straight out of college I founded a home automation company that installed home theaters, lighting controls, whole home audio, and an automation platform called Life|ware to bring it all together at the touch of a button. Above is a photo of an ad Life|ware ran in CEPro Magazine (Trade publication) featuring my company. I still have a lot of interest and passion for home automation. I currently use Apple's HomeKit platform, with a few legacy devices added via HomeBridge.

    App Development

    After having many conversations with engineering teams about simple changes that would take "days" to complete, I decided to learn how to code. I started with iOS, and published 6 different apps over several years to the App Store. I've published apps in Objective-C and Swift. I've published apps for tabletop gaming tools, brewery tracking lists, medication reminders, and anesthesia billing. I even made an app that educated users on the odds of winning the Powerball.

    Arduino

    Prototyping physical things through Arduino has been a recent addition to my hobbies. It's a wonderful intersection of code, building things, and writing apps that has been incredibly rewarding. For the golf team I'm coaching, I made a target practice board for the girls that lights up when it's struck with a golf ball. I also made a Bluetooth enabled hardware storage board that counts up "Days since X accident" for a friend.

    UX Networking

    In the early days of my career, I got a lot of helpful advice and connections from local area meetups. To return the love back to the community, I've co-founded a group called Experience Designers of Indianapolis. I'm also on the leadership committee for our local IxDA chapter.
